White House Reveals Government Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark

Administration officials confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative noted that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union for federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved soon.

At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, unions filed for a court injunction to block the government from implementing any reductions in force during the funding gap. Additionally, a court official ordered the administration to provide specifics on layoff plans, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

A report contended that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the government to conduct terminations, citing guidance that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs took place on the very day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the end of the previous month but excluding the beginning of the current month, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate said. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
