Larry Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board

Leadership Change
The former official declared he would withdraw from public positions after House committee released his regular messages with Epstein

Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a batch of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became public.

The economist commented in a release that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have participated, excited about the promise of the organization, and look forward following their development".

The former Harvard president, who formerly headed Harvard University, declared on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Email Communications

The recently released messages revealed that Summers communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 arrest for alleged human trafficking of underage individuals.

In additional comments, the technology organization stated it accepted his decision to step down.

"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the perspective he offered to the governing body," the organization commented.

Legislative Background

This news arrives after both chambers of the legislative branch voted on Tuesday to approve a bill that would mandate the US justice department to release its files on the case.

The bill will then proceed to the desk of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. Trump has indicated he plans to sign the legislation, after changing his stance on the issue following pressure from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A batch of Epstein-connected correspondence released by the Congressional committee last week included several high-profile figures in the billionaire's previous network, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those people.

The emails revealed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to introduce the academic to influential global figures.

Individual Statement

After the correspondence were shared with the general audience, he said he assumed "total ownership for my poor choice to persist in communicating with Mr Epstein".

He further stated that he desired "to restore faith and repair connections with the persons nearest to me".

Career Background

The professor held senior posts under party leaders; serving as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He presided over Harvard from five years and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his withdrawal from public commitments earlier on this week, he indicated he would maintain his teaching commitments.

Other Impacts

Following the economist's statement on Monday, the policy organization, a progressive policy institute in the capital where the professor was a researcher, announced that Summers was no longer associated with the organization.

The former official became part of the directorate of the AI company, which makes the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a defeated move to oust its CEO Sam Altman.
