Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the early candidates under consideration to succeed Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was dismissed on Sunday after the squad's 10-match winless start to the Premier League season.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have historic associations to the club - are part of the options to be considered by the Wolves leadership.
Edwards is currently at another club, which would pose a possible hurdle to his appointment at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton manager - who played over a century of games for Wolves during his time as a player - is considered a strong contender for the position.
The 42-year-old is said to have backing from the Wolves directors as they start the search of hiring a new manager.
O'Neil is additionally appearing as a unexpected candidate, although he would be a surprising appointment given he was released by Wolves in December last year.
The ex- West Ham United player is out of work which means the club would not need to pay any compensation.
