Big 12 Conference Commissioner Labels Notre Dame Comments Following CFP Omission as ‘Completely Out of Bounds’

At a strong criticism, Big 12 Conference commissioner declared that Notre Dame's athletic director, Pete Bevacqua, was “completely out of bounds” for public remarks about the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Root of the Dispute

The Fighting Irish maintains a football scheduling alliance with the ACC and is a participating member in all other sports. Bevacqua has contended that the ACC harmed Notre Dame’s chances to enter the College Football Playoff, instead pushing for the selection of the University of Miami.

“The ACC do great things for Notre Dame, but we provide substantial football value to the ACC, and we couldn't comprehend why you would go out of your way to try to hurt us in this procedure,” Bevacqua remarked.

The Hurricanes eventually secured the CFP invitation over Notre Dame, primarily due to winning the head-to-head contest between the two programs. Bevacqua further alleged that the ACC engaged in a coordinated social media push over several weeks demonstrating its support for Miami.

An Egregious Response

Subsequently on Tuesday, Yormark addressed the comments at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.

“In my view his behavior has been out of line,” Yormark commented. “He is completely out of bounds in his approach and if he was in the same room, I’d tell him the same thing.”

This public response is especially notable given Bevacqua’s special position. He serves on the College Football Playoff Management Committee with the ten FBS conference commissioners, advocating for the concerns of football independent Notre Dame.

Past Context and Speculative Moves

The commissioner further remarked the assistance the ACC offered Notre Dame during the pandemic-disrupted 2020 season, providing the Irish a complete ACC schedule and a place in its championship game.

“His behavior has been unacceptable,” he said again. “It’s been egregious attacking Jim Phillips, when they helped Notre Dame during Covid...”

Talk had spread about Notre Dame possibly leaving the ACC and partnering with the Big 12. Yet, the commissioner's public reprimand on Tuesday appear to make such a partnership unlikely in the near term.

The Irish, who reached the CFP championship game last season, have stated they plan to decline a postseason invitation after missing out this season.
